Supported by Regions4Climate (R4C) and driven by an extroverted spirit, dynamism, and massive public participation, the events of the 3rd Alternative Tourism Festival “GeoFest” have drawn to a successful close. This year, the central square of Sitia was transformed into the ultimate focal point for highlighting authentic local identity and sustainable development.
The event, designed and implemented by the Sitia UNESCO Global Geopark, placed the invaluable natural and cultural heritage of the region at the forefront. The festival’s primary objective was the dynamic promotion of local businesses, shops, and producers who have joined the Quality Pact, demonstrating in practice how Sitia’s unique identity can serve as the spearhead for the local economy.

The Sitia Geopark at the Heart of Sustainable Development
The streets and the central square were filled with people, flavours, and aromas. Hundreds of visitors had the opportunity to come into direct contact with exceptional local products and meet the producers themselves, who stand as the guardians of the land’s authenticity.
Local professionals from the catering and tourist accommodation sectors participated actively throughout the events, highlighting the vital importance of linking daily business practices with the principles of sustainability advocated by the Geopark.
A Powerful Alliance Supported by Regions4Climate
This major celebration by the Geopark was significantly bolstered by a major institutional and scientific synergy. The European Horizon programme Regions4Climate (R4C) of the Municipality of Sitia stood as a valuable supporter of the initiatives.
The joint presence of the Geopark team and Regions4Climate representatives sealed an essential alliance. In this way, the Municipality’s climate strategy and scientific expertise were placed at the service of the Geopark, providing the necessary tools to shield the region and enhance its resilience against modern environmental challenges.
A Promise for the Future Put into Action
The 3rd “GeoFest” went far beyond the narrow confines of a typical promotional event. It sent a resonant message that for the Municipality of Sitia, sustainability is not an abstract concept, but a living promise put into practice day by day in its streets and squares. Science, climate shielding, and the authenticity of local people united under the shared vision of the Sitia UNESCO Global Geopark, laying firm foundations for a strong and sustainable future.
