The urgent need to transition toward a tourism model that protects the environment and actively tackles climate change took center stage during a joint World Tourism Day event hosted by the Municipalities of Sitia and Ierapetra. Held in the picturesque harbor of Makry Gialos—a location that geographically and developmentally bridges the two regions of Southeastern Crete—the event carried a powerful symbolic message of regional unity.

This year’s celebration highlighted the deep interconnection between the region’s tourism identity and climate adaptation, featuring the active participation and contribution of the European project Regions4Climate (R4C), funded by Horizon Europe. The program participated in the event to provide the strategic and scientific foundation needed to embed sustainability and resilience into the local economy. Through this collaborative presence, local authorities and project representatives emphasized that safeguarding fragile ecosystems, coastal zones, and natural assets is a non-negotiable prerequisite for maintaining a high-quality, future-proof tourism product.

Local government representatives stressed that cross-border, regional cooperation and the creation of joint actions are among the most powerful tools for boosting outward-looking growth, promoting the destination, and creating sustainable development opportunities for the benefit of local communities.

The event also underscored the vital role of the local community and the human element in shaping authentic hospitality. While infrastructure and natural beauty form the foundation, it is the combination of authenticity and climate-conscious, sustainable experiences that creates meaningful memories for visitors and secures the long-term viability of the destination.

Supported by local businesses, hotel units, and regional stakeholders, this collective initiative proved that a green transition and climate resilience can only be achieved when local communities and pioneering European programs like Regions4Climate work hand in hand.
