The Pärnumaa region, known for its picturesque landscapes and environmental diversity, is taking significant strides toward building climate resilience. Central to these efforts is the Smart Park initiative, which is an important partner for Pärnumaa as a whole, with the region being part of the broader Regions for Climate (R4C) project.
In a recent conversation with Kadri Rea, the project manager, we explored how Smart Park is contributing to climate resilience and sustainability in Pärnumaa, highlighting the educational programs, technological innovations, and community involvement driving these efforts.
The Vision Behind Smart Park
Smart Park was conceived as a practical, hands-on educational facility aimed at demonstrating effective solutions for renewable energy and sustainability. According to Kadri, the main inspiration was to create a space where real-world applications of renewable energy sources like wind and solar power could be monitored and taught. The park provides an interactive environment where students and the general public can learn about the differences between conventional electricity sources and renewable energy produced directly from nature.
Educational Programs and Community Engagement
A key aspect of Smart Park’s contribution to climate resilience is its focus on education. The park offers tailored programs for different educational levels, including climate change and food for 4th graders, the carbon cycle and greenhouse effect for 7th graders, and renewable energy for 9th graders. These programs are designed to be as practical as possible, allowing students to build wind turbines, measure CO2 levels, and understand the dynamics of renewable energy production.

The educational programs not only aim to impart knowledge but also address the psychological impacts of climate change. One significant challenge identified in the region is the anxiety associated with climate change, particularly among young students. By providing structured educational materials and practical solutions, the programs help alleviate this anxiety and empower students with the knowledge to understand and address climate issues.
Technological Innovations and Sustainability
Smart Park is equipped with various renewable energy installations, including wind turbines and solar panels. These installations are not merely for demonstration; they play a crucial role in the park’s operational sustainability. For instance, wind energy is used for ventilation, and solar panels power various facilities within the park. The strategic placement of these installations maximizes energy efficiency, taking advantage of the region’s windy and sunny conditions.
Additionally, Smart Park features charging stations for mobile devices and electric scooters, covered with solar panels to ensure they are self-sufficient. These stations provide a practical solution for the community, promoting the use of renewable energy in everyday activities and reducing reliance on non-renewable power sources.
Environmental and Economic Impact
The Smart Park serves as a model of sustainability for the entire Pärnumaa region. By demonstrating how renewable energy can be harnessed and utilised effectively, it sets an example for local residents and businesses. The project aims to lower operational costs for municipal buildings by reducing dependence on non-renewable energy, thereby promoting economic sustainability alongside environmental benefits.
Furthermore, the park’s landscape design contributes to reducing the heat island effect and enhancing biodiversity. With 16 different species of trees and bushes, the park not only provides shade and cooler temperatures but also supports local wildlife, fostering a richer ecological environment.

Smart Park in Pärnumaa stands as a testament to the region’s commitment to building climate resilience through education, technological innovation, and community engagement. By providing practical, hands-on learning experiences and showcasing the effective use of renewable energy, the park not only addresses current climate challenges but also inspires future generations to continue the pursuit of sustainability. Through initiatives like Smart Park, Pärnumaa is paving the way for a more resilient and sustainable future.
